'M' Lakes: 9/6/10
I drove over to Mormon Lake this morning to hike the Ledges Trail from Dairy Springs Campground with my kids (great kid hike, by the way!). On the
way I scanned Upper Lake Mary, where a handful of interesting birds were on the water: ~16 Forster's terns, 12 black-necked stilts, 3 American avocet,
3 eared grebes, 3 western grebes, 1 double-crested cormorant, 1 osprey and 1 great egret. Not a bad total considering the birds were sharing the
lakes with water skiiers, kayakers, sailboats, etc...
Mormon Lake did not have many birds visible in open water - I picked out a couple Western/Clark's grebes and ~50 black dots that could have been eared
grebes. About 100 elk were in loose herds spread throughout the vegetation around the lake.
Dairy Springs was fairly active with yellow-rumped warblers, a spectacular Grace's warbler, olive-sided flycatcher, hermit thrushes, nuthatches,
bluebirds and robins.
