Bosque del Apache - December 3-5 2010
Dave and Marcia Lamkin are organizing a December 3-5 visit to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. The Bosque is, of course an iconic birding
place with many species certain to be seen, but perhaps the biggest attraction is the amazing spectacle of tens of thousands of wintering Sandhill
Cranes and white geese. The incredible mass fights of cranes and geese at the morning “fly out” and evening “fly in” are legendary. Dave and Marcia
have visited the Bosque at least 25 times over the last 35 years, and find a three day, two night visit to be optimum. Day one: an early start from
Flagstaff for the 6-7 hour drive to Bosque, arriving about 3:00 pm in plenty of time for the “fly in”. Day two: Out for the dawn “fly out”, midday
free for touring the refuge car route, hiking, etc, and in the evening a second “fly in”. We will probably organize a bird walk or two on this day for
those interested. Day three: a second “flyout”, then drive home. There are a few openings for lodging at a very special B&B near the refuge, one of
the proprietors being Phil Norton, a longtime (now retired) manager of Bosque. Phil is truly a wealth of information and has agreed to give a
presentation for our group. To sign up, for further information about the B&B, other lodging options, driving routes, etc., contact Dave at
dvdlamkin@yahoo.com. Those wishing to stay at the B&B, should contact Dave by the end of August.
