Holbrook - Saturday September 4th

Trip Leader: Eric Hough

Early September is an excellent time to check for migrating shorebirds and passerines in Arizona. Holbrook is one such location to view a wide variety of birds during migration, but is still seldom visited by birders. Join us on Saturday, September 4th on a trip to check out the wastewater ponds, agricultural fields, abandoned tree farm, and reservoir that lie on the north side of I-40 just west of downtown Holbrook. Target birds will be shorebirds, flycatchers, warblers, sparrows, and perhaps we will have luck with the illusive Scaled Quail. Rarer species such as Northern Waterthrush, American Redstart, and Clay-colored Sparrow have all been recorded in the past at this time of year here and last year's mid-September NAAS trip yielded a respectable 69 species. For those wishing to carpool, we will meet at 7:00am at the southeast corner of the Walmart parking lot in Flagstaff. If you choose to meet us at Holbrook, take I-40 east from Flagstaff to exit 283 (Perkins Valley Rd./Golf Course Rd. exit). It takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to Holbrook. We will bird until around 11:00am so that participants can arrive back in Flagstaff shortly after noon (unless there is a desire to stay longer, carpool arrangements and personal schedules depending). Temperatures may still be getting into the 90 degree range, thunderstorms are a definite possibility, and some walking will be involved, so dress accordingly. The roads behind the golf course that access the agricultural fields, tree farm, and reservoir can be traveled in a passenger car, but there are some ruts and potholes. Water, snacks, sunscreen, and insect repellent are recommended items to bring. Spotting scopes are also useful, especially for shorebird identification. Please contact me before the trip so I know how many to expect. Hope to have you along!
